If it hadn't been for the quick response of civilians in the crowd with some basic skills in emergency medical training on that tragic day in Tucson, January 8th, lives would not have been saved and the prognosis of those that survived might not have been so promising. While Ada & Don hope they never have to use the skills they learned, they joined an overwhelming number of Tucsonans at the American Red Cross's, "Save a Life Saturday" being held today at our local YMCA, and other Y's all over the country, in Honor of Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Whether it be a traffic accident, a swimming pool drowning, or any other emergency where you happen to be the first on the scene, a few lifesaving skills can sustain life until those with advanced training arrive. Remember the three C's; Check out the situation, get someone to Call 911, and provide Care. It can save lives everyday!

Chiricahua National Monument

Aprox. 130 miles southeast of Tucson there is a “Wonderland of Rocks” that is known as Chiricahua (cheri-cow-wa) National Monument, where along 8-miles of a paved scenic drive and 17-miles of day-use hiking trails, visitors discover the beauty, natural sounds, and inhabitants of this 11,985 acre site; historic homeland of Geronimo and still known today as Apache territory.

The Chiricahua Mountains are one of the many "sky island" ranges in southern Arizona. They rise like islands from the surrounding grassland "sea". Plants and animals from four ecosystems; Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre Mountains, Sonoran & Chihuahuan Deserts, meet here. Black bear, mountain lions, Arizona white-tail deer, coati-mundis, rattlesnakes & lizards, and a variety of birds all make this their habitat. And, while one species of skunk is usually fine in most places, you can find four species of skunk here, so be alert!

It’s a photographer’s dream place, although my lense can’t begin to capture the vast mountain range and sense of wilderness. Truly, a must visit should you get near this southeast corner of Arizona.

Heard Museum Indian Art Fair

This weekend the 53rd Annual Heard Museum celebrates the rich art and heritage of the Natives peoples from across the American continent at the Indian Fair and Market in Phoenix, Az. The fair is a major event in furthering the Heard Museum’s mission of educating all of us about the cultures and arts of the Native Americans. The rich heritage of the American Native tribes can be found not only in the collections found at the museum, but also in the dynamic living cultures preserved by the arts and artisans who were chosen to be a part of this highly juried and significant occasion. From the intricate pottery designs and the story telling within rug weaving, to the precious jewelry we all long to wear, it’s a fun filled two days where the tribes from all over the Southwest have come to share and sell their wares; and all complemented with native entertainment, dance, and oh yes, the fry bread. Don and I are personally curious this year, as this year they are spotlighting the people from the Sonoran Desert, the O’odham tribe; a tribe that lies within our back yard of Tucson. We are bringing our visitors from England along, Anita and David. In addition to the dreamy weather, they too, over the years, have fallen in love with all of the Southwest’s beauty, history and spectacular art of both the western Cowboy, and Native Americans……

The 86th annual La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, Arizona’s "Celebration of the Cowboy", is centered on the Tucson Rodeo for nine days this month. It's one of the top 25 professional rodeo events in North America and the event is an official event in the year-long celebration leading up to Arizona’s 100th statehood birthday on Feb. 12, 2012.

Schools are out and Cowboys are in.

Mutin Bustin...the youngins, 5 to 7year olds, don't stay on long.......

This major outdoor event attracts locals and visitors from all over the world. Schools are closed on Thursday and Friday of rodeo week so families can enjoy the festive parade and rodeo traditions. Visitors come to experience the area’s Old West ways, including this championship rodeo, under warm desert skies, come rain or come shine. Everyone has dusted off their boots, grabbed their Setson, and are ready to see championship rodeo at it's best. Whether it's Mustin Bustin, Junior rodeo, Bareback riding, Steer wrestling, Saddle bronc riding,

Team roping, Barrel racing, or the crowd favorite, Bull Riding, there are 700 cowboy contestants, all looking to stay on a bull the longest or rope a steer the fastest. They have come at the pleasure of the massive crowds who have come to cheer them on to winning an event or two. Ada has been working as a volunteer (her third year) in the ticket booth this year; a promotion from ticket taking of previous years. (I guess they found out she knows how to work a credit card machine and has experience in sales.) Its great fun and a great non-profit organization whose mission benefits the University of Arizona Scholarship fund, the Lion’s Club, Rotary Clubs and 4-H Groups.

Road trip, part 2, Las Vegas

We arrived in Las Vegas under sunny warm skies on Thursday, amidst a whole host of low flying planes coming into McCarran Airport in rapid succession. Its Super Bowl weekend and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority expect a great boost across the economy board with about 275,000 extra visitors. Visitors are expected to spend about $85.6 million on food, entertainment and a lot of gaming and sport betting. People are here from around the world and are out and about soaking up the excitement of the Super Bowl, and the Super weather, especially if they came from anywhere other than the Southwest, which seems to be the only area spared the evils of this winter.

Road trip, part 1, Tucson to Palm Springs

Leaving Tucson and heading west through the Sonoran Desert, passing through Gila Bend, Buckeye and so many other towns, small and all so similar, we are working our way to Quartzite, Arizona; the half way mark of our 350 mile trip to the Palm Springs area. Quartzite is the geode and gem rock capitol of the country and maybe even the world. We will be having lunch there and will poke around some before making our way to California, to the Palm Springs area approximately two hours down the road from Quartzite. We will actually be staying in Indio, CA, where dates are the main attraction for Donald. For sure, we will venture over to the Oasis Date Farm, the biggest and most famous date place, where he will be having date shakes, nut stuffed dates and also purchasing a few pounds of them for himself, and a few more to take back to Tucson for Lena & Stephen. And, guess where he will spend the afternoon? Ha, ha, ha…….

The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea, seagulls and all, is a salt water surprise 30 miles south of the Palm Springs area along Rte 111, which was formed between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado River burst through poorly built irrigation controls south of Yuma, Arizona. Almost the entire flow of the river filled the Salton Basin for more than a year, inundating communities, farms and the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Continued filling of the Salton Sink was finally stopped in 1907, when a line of protective levees were built by boxcars dumping boulders into the breach from Southern Pacific tracks. By then, this inland lake was about 40 miles long and 13 miles wide, covering an area of about 400 square miles.

The Salton Sea is currently 35 miles by 15 miles and can be as long as 40 miles by almost 20 miles in particularly wet years. It has an average depth of 29.9 feet and, at its deepest, is 51 feet. It contains 7.3 million acre feet of water and evaporates 1.3 million acre feet each year. There is a five-mile-long trench on the south end of the Sea that is 51 feet deep. The Sea is currently 228 feet below sea level. Interestingly, the bed of the Salton Sea is only five feet higher than the lowest spot in Death Valley.

Of course, having had lunch at the Ocotillo Café, we were then ready, with map in hand, for a great outdoor experience. For no less than 2 hours, this 2 mile nature walk will provide plenty of fresh air and Kodak moments at every turn. As members, this is a one of our favorite places that definitely provides a high “WOW” factor when you bring guests.. …

Hubbell Trading Post

One of the most amazing places in Arizona is Hubbell Trading Post, located in Ganado Arizona, about 400 miles north in the snow country of Arizona. While traveling there would be unlikely for us snowbirds, we are fortunate to have our own Western National Parks Association store here in Tucson that hosts a traveling version of this wonderful woven art show a few times a year; where hundreds of handcrafted Navajo rugs, in a wide variety of sizes and designs are available for our purchasing pleasure. (Even Donald’s) Klagetoh, Wide Ruins, Teec Nos Pos, Ganado Red . . . these very names of Navajo rug styles evoke hints of distant lands and the rich artistic traditions of other cultures. All too often the history of the West contains tales of the clash of cultures, but occasionally there was a place where people of many backgrounds came together in cooperation. One such place was the trading post of Lorenzo Hubbell in Ganado, Arizona.

As the oldest continuously operating trading post on the Navajo Nation, Hubbell Trading Post has served the area since 1883 as a place where many peoples could meet in exchanges both cultural and economic. In recognition of its importance, the trading post became a National Historic Site in 1967 in order to maintain an active living trading post environment for future generations. Western Nationals Parks association (WNPA) has operated the trading post for the National Park Service since 1967. And the best part..........no sales tax here!

Salem is getting a new museum that is all about itself

Such a great New Year's gift..... Talked about by many, for so many years, and even a Boston Globe article this past fall highlighted the need for Salem to have a Museum dedicated to all of Salem's history, not just any single event, where visitors can trace the steps of Salem's history under one roof. Below is today's Salem News press release, written by Tom Dalton, outling some of the details should you wish to read it in it's entirety. Thanks Gordon College. Good job Tom.

SALEM — There is a new museum coming to town, and it is not — trumpets, please — a witch museum.
The Museum of Salem is scheduled to open in April on the first floor of Old Town Hall. Under the leadership of Gordon College, which manages the historic property on Front Street, planning has been under way for months.

This museum — maybe "gallery" is a better term — will use a series of large, interpretive display panels to tell the city's story from its Native American beginnings to its 21st-century present.
The museum won't neglect the infamous witchcraft trials of 1692, but it won't dwell on them, either. After all, those tragic events are fully covered in other places and are but a brief moment in nearly four centuries of history.

"It will have a significant place, but no more significant than some of the other major contributions that Salem has made to our nation's history," said David Goss, director of museum and historic studies at Gordon.
"We're hoping it will put the Salem witchcraft trials into its proper historic context and not overshadow, to so great a degree, all of the other things that have happened in Salem's history."

The Salem museum will be a place, Goss said, where visitors can begin an exploration of the city, get an overview of what happened here and, hopefully, find the answer to the question: Why does Salem matter?
Goss, who is spearheading this project, can answer that question in a hundred different ways.

"Salem is one of the very earliest of American settlements — that makes us significant," he said. "We are also instrumental in helping establish the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This was the first capital of the Mass Bay Colony prior to Boston. ...
"I guess we were the beachhead, we were the Normandy, when you think of the Puritan arrival in the New World."

Even before the Puritans, there was life in Salem. Originally called Naumkeag, this was the site of an important Native American settlement.
"The path that is Essex Street was a pre-Colonial path that was used by the natives," Goss said. "It went from downtown Salem way out to Winter Island."

As is told so well at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, this was once a major seaport. This new museum will highlight Salem as a fishing port, a center of the China trade and home base for privateers during the American Revolution.
Salem also has interesting links to the Civil War, westward expansion and even the Gold Rush, all of which will be explored.

"The first mayor of San Francisco was the former mayor of Salem," Goss said.
A lot of people are working behind the scenes on The Museum of Salem, which is receiving funding from Gordon College and other sources.
Kristina Wacome-Stevick of Gordon College, the artistic director of "History Alive!" helped get the project off the ground.

Agnes Howard and Emerson "Tad" Baker, history professors at Gordon and Salem State University, respectively, have made significant contributions, as has John Goff, president of the nonprofit Salem Preservation Inc. and a local authority on Salem's early history.
Maryellen Smiley, a former curator at the Wenham Museum, is serving as curator on this project and pulling a lot of the material together. Gordon students have been working as researchers.

The interpretive panels, which will include art work and depictions of famous figures in the city's history, are being done by Great Island Design of Salem, which is run by Debra Glabeau and Ken Harris.
The museum is expected to hold a "soft opening" in April and add more interpretive panels in the following weeks.

On April 21, the museum planning team will headline a special 7:30 p.m. program at Old Town Hall, which will introduce the new museum to the public.

Where Nature, Art & Culture Connect!

Nestled between Oracle Road and La Cañada lies a 40 acre oasis. An outdoor museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the vegetation of the Sonoran Desert; a sanctuary for birds and other desert inhabitants in a more natural state. Bobcats, coyotes, javelina, rattlesnakes and more traverse the dry washes in this area and if you are lucky, you might just see one. No cages or pens, nature is free to roam anywhere with-in this Eco friendly environment....... so have your cameras ready. Unfortunately, we only saw bunny rabbits and birds this trip.

By day this is a pretty quite place. Sounds of birds and rustling bushes are the basic sounds you will hear. If you are lucky to arrive in time for the docent tour, you will truly appreciate and learn about all the adapted plants that have survived and flourished in the desert.

As you arrive, and before your start on the walking paths, there is a Park Tea Room where they serve breakfast for the early explorers, and lunch for us later arrivals.With their focus on native plants, there are greenhouses where you can purchase plants for your own home garden and plenty of green thumbed experts that will gladly give advise on how to maintain what you have or suggest something you might add. Donald spends a lot of time talking with these folks while I take the pictures of the plants and try to remember all the names. Of course, buying a book in the gift shop helps too. a huge grove of Prickly Pear Cactus

Throughout the park their are Ramadas to rest the weary soles (of your feet) and take shade. Did you ever guess where the "Ramada Inn" got their name? Well, in the Southwest it's an open or semi-enclosed shelter roofed with brush or branches, designed especially to provide shade. Throughout the park you can find these, mostly made out of the spines of fallen Saguaro cactus.

An Exhibit House showcases the art, reflecting the rich legacy of the Southwest Indian, Mexican and Cowboy traditions.(pottery, rugs and paintings.)The Desert Discovery Education Center hosts an ongoing schedule of lectures. classes and workshops for all ages. The Wells Fargo Foyer Gallery puts the spotlight on the park's permanent collections, and most important, restrooms........

Certainly, it's a place that will beckon you back many times to visit, so it's best if you become a member, and we did. Although we've been here a number of times, mostly for lunch with Lena & Steve over the years, we look forward to going back many times over the winter months, especially now that we are members, and we plan on sharing with visitors too. And, did I tell you, they have the best prickly pear lemonade in town. (A whole other blog.)

The 4th Avenue Street Fair is held twice a year; once in the spring and once in December. For us snowbirds, it’s a chance to do some Christmas shopping in the sunny outdoors and from some really talented artisans that come to Tucson from all over the Southwest.

Our first Mexican food adventure since arriving in Tucson......

Teresa's Mosaic Cafe

Opened in 1984, the Matias family has been cooking up great Mexican food at Teresa's Mosaic Cafe. A place on the hill that has been around for as long as we have had the B&B. (We bought the B&B in 1984 too.)

Located a mile or so west of I-10, this casual Mexican restaurant, with colorful mosaic tile tables, mirror frames, and an exposed tortilla making counter, is on the corner of Grant and Silverbell and well worth finding for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Margarita’s, fresh lemonade and the best selection of Mexican fare and salsa, it’s the best place we’ve found to go for Mexican food this side of the boarder.

We originally found out about this great place when our friend Lena was looking for a caterer for her daughter’s engagement Fiesta a few years ago. Since then, it has become a great spot for a meal if you're on your way home from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Old Tucson Studios, or Saguaro National Park's west. A place we always take visitors and a great place to enjoy home style Mexican food in a family friendly atmosphere, Ada's slightly eaten enchilada....

The name of the restaurant is Teresa’s Mosaic Café and the decor is all about the crafted mosaic tiled tables and counters. Remodeled in 2001, each table is unique and was handmade. They rolled out the clay, cut it into shapes. (chilies, butterflies, flowers, saguaros’). Then they embossed, glazed and fired them. Also, the Chef’s table has all the family’s personal items inlaid. It was a way of incorporating jewelry, keys, antiques and other items that were special to the Matias family; truly making the restaurant feel like home for them. And certainly, anyone that owns a restaurant knows, you do tend to live there. (we can relate to that.)

down to witness the magic of Music City. Where future talent, yet to make it big, are all hopeful for a chance to be invited to perform on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry just around the corner.

Just across the way from the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum is country music's new Walk of Fame. Not quite the miles of stars that they have in Hollywood, only a dozen or so notables have a star so far, but surely many more will added in time.

As the B&B season comes to a close and we head off to enjoy our western lives for a while, Ada will certainly miss her Girl Thursday duties and all the great folks at City Hall, especially these folks.
And if you haven't been to the Adriatic Restaurant on Washington Street, you really need to gather a few friends or take a date to this casual dining restaurant featuring the cuisine of the regions surrounding the Adriatic sea; where fresh fish and seasonal vegetables, together with wood burning pizza, and pasta dishes create the main menu, along with so much more......

Three weeks young, Custom House Rotisserie owner Bill Van Loon and chef Denis Griswold are serving up their “taste of home, not far from home” fare to a booming Halloween crowd today that have found their new home tucked along the pedestrian ally at 2 Liberty Street. Their menu features rotisserie chicken and turkey, meatloaf and fixings like corn bread, baked macaroni and cheese, apple and sausage stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and sweet corn. The tariff ranges from about $5 for sandwiches to $25 for a family meal with main course and choice of side dishes. In addition to poultry, they offer salads, and burger and hot dogs baskets complete with french fries and a drink. While they only have 6 stools at the bar for eating in, it’s primarily a take out place. And….next week, they will start their delivery service to your home (with-in reason) or you can call ahead and pick-up the evening meal on your way home.

Swiss and British visitors.........

Mornings at the Amelia Payson House are most often an international event and today we welcome visitors from Switzerland and England to our breakfast table. It's so common this time of year to host travelers from so many countries around the globe; all preferring to visit New England in the fall when the cool crisp air is perfect for sightseeing.

What is it about those changing leaves??? New England is the place to be in September and October and these folks are enjoying every bit of it. While the itineraries are moving more through New Hampshire and Vermont these months, rather than the coastal beaches, the next six weeks will be super busy and a blurr for all of us in the hospitality business. Ok, when you don’t have a local election (so glad) there’s always another candidate that could use your help. Today, when most folks were out picking apples or just enjoying a great fall day, I walked a North Salem neighborhood for Duval Patrick in his re-election bid as Governor of Massachusetts. It certainly sounded like a fun idea on Thursday when Jason asked, “What are you doing on Saturday. Would you like to canvas a neighborhood for Gov. Duval Patrick? ” Sure….. So off I went, originally with the Mayor and another friend, to check out, as one might say, the political climate.
By and large, folks were positive, some were talkative, and others just let me say my piece and leave some literature. No dogs or people bit me. (My biggest fear.) Just a nice afternoon chitchatting. One street was even hosting a block party. Although I was hungry, I didn’t have the nerve to ask for a hotdog. A few of the streets were deserted as I’m sure they were off doing Saturday errands or picking those apples we alluded to earlier. Of course, there was a list and I was either going to finish the list or run out of flyers. I would have preferred to finish the list, (I hate turning in unfinished work.) but with 80% of the list complete, the flyers ran out and I called it a day after about two hours. All and all, some exercise and helping our Governor, it turned out to be a good way to spend a sunny September Saturday in Salem. I hope he wins. He has my vote, along with my shoe leather.

New England was very fortunate that hurricane Earl decided to take a more easterly tack on Friday, and while we had our concerns about possible power outages that might affect the operation and comfortablility of guests this weekend, ours guests, New Yorkers with a sense of adventure, weren’t about to have a little storm ruin their long Labor Day weekend plans and came just as planned. Needless to say, a few leaves blew off the trees and we had a bit of rain, but nothing anywhere near predictions and everyone was relieved and ready to go Saturday morning when daylight brought sunshine, blue skies and a cool front that came in from the west. A picture perfect fall day for sure………..Ok, where's the Trolley?

Tonight, we're hosting a special couple spending their 22nd Anniversary at the Amelia Payson House. Like all busy business owners, special celebrations can take second stage, but as a surprise for Giovanni, (chef and co-owner of Caffe Graziani here in Salem) his wife Paula was not going to let their Anniversary go uncelebrated. Rather than return home to East Boston after they close their restaurant for the night, they will be staying in Salem and hopefully enjoying some nightlife before settling into their accommodations at our B&B. We are so glad that Paula gave us a last minute shout and we are thrilled that we could accommodate them. While they may not be here for our breakfast, as they too serve breakfast at the restaurant, they at least will be able to lounge in a bit longer than usual as their their travel time to the Caffe in the morning will be more of a short stroll over to Washington Street as opposed to a earlier mad dash from Boston. Don and Ada wish Paula & Giovanni a very Happy Anniversary and many more years of wedded bliss.......and sweet sauce success at the Caffe.

Salem is the Birthplace of the National Guard and the Governor came to make it official!

It's not every day you get your picture taken with the Governor. He was here to sign a bill distinguishing Salem as the Birthplace of the National Guard.

I just happen to be walking into City Hall today, my normal routine on Thursdays, and he escorted me up the stairs to the Council Chambers where our Mayor, Kim Driscoll welcomed Governor Duval Patrick, Congressman John Tierney, State Senator Frederick Berry, State Representative John Keenan, and many esteemed National Guard Servicemen and Women that were here to celebrate and participate in the signing of this historic acknowledgement.

SALEM — It may have taken 373 years, but the city is finally getting some long-overdue recognition. State legislators last week designated Salem "the birthplace of the National Guard," officially commemorating the 1637 muster of the country's first militia on Salem Common.
In substance, the bill merely calls for state highway workers to put up signs along the entrance corridors proclaiming Salem's special designation. Champions of the bill, however, say the recognition is yet another badge of honor for this city of historic firsts.
"I think it reinforces the fact that we're not just about witches," said state Rep. John Keenan, the bill's sponsor. "We have a maritime history and now history with the National Guard. This is a way to declare to other folks in Massachusetts and the entire country that we are the birthplace of the National Guard, which is something to be extremely proud of."
"It gives Salem another dimension," Moran said. "It's another thing where it's a first."
Exactly when the National Guard was officially created may be open to some interpretation.
The state's Executive Office of Public Safety and Security claims the first units of the Massachusetts Militia were organized in Plymouth in 1621, Salem in 1629 and Boston in 1630.
The National Guard was born on Dec. 13, 1636, when town militia companies were organized into three regiments: North, South and East. (At the time, the colonists faced threats from nearby Pequot Indians and the colony wanted militia members to be ready in case of attack.)
Salem's birthplace claim centers around a muster on Salem Common in the spring of 1637. According to the Massachusetts National Guard, the Salem men represented "the country's first militia," and the muster "began the foundation for what would become the National Guard."
Salem's claim to a piece of the origins of the American military has so far gone unchallenged — quite unlike the heated rivalry between Marblehead and Beverly, which both squabble over being dubbed the birthplace of the U.S. Navy.
"I'm not aware of any other state with a designated area that conflicts with ours, so, yes, I do believe that's correct," Keenan said of Salem's spot in American military history.
Moran hopes to some day create a Museum of the First Muster, which he thinks will be helped by the city's new designation.
"That's a real possibility with the recognition now," Moran said. "It'd be easier for the groups to get grants for things like that."
Next up, Moran said, is federal recognition.
"John Tierney knows about it and knows we'll be knocking on his door with a petition to take before the Congress, which I don't feel will be a tough ride," Moran said.
The bill passed in the waning moments of the legislative session last week. At one point, its fate was in jeopardy after the Mass Department of Transportation refused to cover the expense of the sign, Keenan said.
"We'll find a way to pay for the sign," Keenan said.

While some people are having barbecues and others are at the beach, I hope you are having a really great time celebrating your Independence Day tradition. At the Amelia Payson House, guests are enjoying a whole host of activities planned throughout the day and night in Salem.

The day started off with the reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Common; a patriotic salute to the true meaning of the holiday. Then most of our guests were going to escape the heat of the mid-day by going to the Peabody Essex Museum; where history and culture abounds in the comfort of AIRCONDITIONING! Later, for sure, they will all gather at Derby Wharf and enjoy the pre-firework festivities that will start at 4pm. Music, games and face painting for the kids, with food vendors galore. Hotdogs, pizza, kettlecorn and cold drinks are the approved food groups of the day. And, as the evening progresses, everyone gets treated to a concert by the Hillyer Festival Orchestra, a military fly over, and, of course, the FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA..... An exceptional day, with great weather as an added bonus for sure!

Our Team: "There's Something About Mary"

75 T-shirts pressed, we were ready to join thousands of people from all over the North Shore, and beyond, that celebrated this beautiful day with friends and families, especially all those Dads, by walking in the 20th North Shore Medical Center's Cancer Walk. (Happy Father's Day )

Our team: There's Something About Mary, joined so many other teams making the 6.2 mile journey through the streets of Salem from the Willows to Salem State College and back. Certainly, we were all pumped for the event and especially excited to be celebrating Mary's much improved health; what a difference a year makes. For sure, we walked with a spring in our step.

Congratulations to those on our team, and all the teams, that raised funds for the future care and treatment of so many Mary's that face this dreaded disease. The fight is ongoing and we pray the cure is eminent. But until then, the care and treatment is so needed and will be funded by the $million goal that will be raised this year. Thanks to all that helped to make a difference this year, and the past 20 years of this walk. Certainly, so many can proudly say they have walked 124 miles for a cure.

PS: Thank you Witch Tees for sponsoring our team with t-shirts again this year. And thank you to The DelBalso Family, and all their poker tournament friends, for donating towards the printing expense. Jim McAllister, the "go to guy" for information about Salem history, is affectionately known and recognized as "Salem's Best Ambassador". Since 1983 he has been educating and entertaining locals and countless visitors about Salem folklore and secrets of the past. If you haven't taken his "Salem 101" course, or been on one of his walking tours, you're out of touch with the real Salem. He started the walking tour craze when we first opened our B&B 26 years ago. Repeat guests wouldn't think about coming back to Salem and not asking about Jim and his latest tour. New kids on the block....Coven...a new, delightful eatery in Salem

At 281 Essex Street, just west of Washington Street, there is a new specialty cafe that opened this week and creating quite a buzz.....A coffee, sandwich and dessert bar, in a building that will always be affectionately known as the Tompkins Furniture Co. (who doesn't have one of their chairs in their house.) Now, there are residential condos on the upper floors and retail and a fitness salon on the first floor. But have no guilt, as Coven is worth every calorie. Just look at the scrumptious desserts. (See Below) While you should have one of their specialty sandwiches first, you may want to have a cupcake as an appetizer. If not, be sure to save room or bring some home. They certainly taste as good as they look.
It has an old market feel, and it's a very inviting and relaxing spot where you can even watch TV or a Movie. Also, it's an internet friendly cafe for those that wish to have a cup of coffee while staying connected....
They're open Sun -Wed. 7:30am to 9:00pm. & Thurs-Sat. 7:30 to 11:00pm. Finally, an after dinner coffee and pastry shop I can walk to. Most probably, I'll need to join that fitness place next door, but maybe, if I walk while I eat and take the long way home, it should be a wash. Works for me!

Day Trip...off to Freeport Maine

If you are into hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, exercising, or boating, you can get anything you want in one of their specialized buildings. They even have a Home Decorating Center where your house can look just like one from Maine; complete with Adirondack chairs, dishes, tables and rugs. Although, you have to like Loons and Moose etched on everything.

We shopped until we dropped and Ada used all her coupons from having, what else, a LLBean credit card. Shoes, a sweater, and one of those famous canvas bags, all free stuff today. (Although, she knows it took a lot gas purchases and hotels stays to earn those coupons. Who's kidding who!)

The day trip is a four hour round trip drive and will cost you ten bucks for tolls. How New Hampshire can sleep at night for charging $2 for traveling 12 miles through there state is another blog, while Maine gets $3, each way. Parking is free and lunch awaits your arrival. The trip home is uneventful, except for the pretty sun setting skies. Oh...Donald did get something too, a new backpack. Not for hiking as you would think, but as an overnight bag for traveling out west. Always planning he is, for his next great escape!

Celebrating their 2nd anniversary in Salem, Sixty 2 on Wharf Restaurant at Pickering Wharf hosted area innkeepers to a four course dining experience that showcased many of the authentic and original dishes available on their menu, and accompanied by especially chosen wines to match the distinctive cuisine. Owner and Chef, Antonio Bettencourt's passion for cooking was sparked while working alongside his mother preparing the nightly meal and holiday dinners. Family trips to Brazil illustrated to Tony the intrinsic relationship between culture, geography and food. The flavors, colors and aromas were things he had never experienced before and they left a lasting impression on the emerging chef........and now it is a family affair, where both he and his wife Valerie combine their talents in offering Salem diners a special place in a modern Italian restaurant. Tony and his team hand craft each item in house from bread to pasta to the cured meats on the small bites menu.

Now that we are back in Salem, time just seems to move at warp speed. Can’t believe it’s been almost a week since my last blog. Certainly, there are a lot of things going on here in Salem, but I guess the yard has been pre-occupying our days lately. Today was a gorgeous day in the 70’s, and with the exception of some rain on Wednesday, it’s been a perfect week for getting the yard spiffed up. Last week, while down at the Salem Beautification plant sale, we met a gal, Nancy, (and she only lives about four doors down from us), who does yard work as a profession. Need I say no more……..Donald and I had her signed up to help us with "this old yard”; a true challenge for these two greenless thumbed B&B owners. Now that we have a mentor and motivator, I think we might have turned the page of yard despair……… We're definitely a work in progress. And now that the chairs are on the deck and the grounds weeded, the planting begins. Of course, yellow, blue, pink and white is the color scheme. No oranges or reds allowed. Ada picks the colors. Donald decides where they go. Nancy plants.

The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women proudly announced its 100 Unsung Heroines of 2010. These women come from cities and towns across the Commonwealth and will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their organizations and communities in a ceremony on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 1-4 p.m. at the State House in Boston.

As chairwoman of Salem's Beautification Committee this year, Marcia was nominated by our Mayor, Kim Driscoll for her many years of community service, not only in her South Salem neighborhood, but for all her contributions Citywide over decades.
Today, she and her team have organized a plant sale on the Common. All proceeds will help her committee fund the many projects planned to beautify Salem; most noticeably will be the traffic islands throughout the city, the Essex Street pedestrian mall, and much, much, more. This committee has certainly flourished since it's beginning 5 years ago and it's success has become infectious. If you happen to be one of the winners of their citywide window box contest, you're a celebrity......

The sale is a two day event. So if you didn't get there today, go tomorrow between 11am-2pm, and say hello to Marcia while you are there. We got our plants today for the B&B; three lovely hanging plants for the back yard and deck area...... Great prices to.

An evening with Alan Jackson and my sista………
While it’s not my first concert, or my second, (my sista and I go as often as we can), I will admit the thrill is always the same when attending an Alan Jackson concert. And lucky for me, he tends to come to New England just in time for my birthday and my sister, in what has become an annual tradition, was able to secure tickets once again this year. Not just any tickets, my sista researches, analyzes and scours the internet for up front, on the floor seats, so that our aging eyes and ears get a good view of all the action and puts us close to the stage for what has to be one of greatest country music sing-a-longs northeast of Nashville. While Ada is a fan, her sister is what we call, a Superfan. Jokingly, I refer to her as an AJ stalker, but it’s all in good fun for sure. Simply, just two country music fans that have loved the sound of a talented lyricist that has been singing about life and “Livin on love”, and “Remembering when”. Performing to sold out crowds made up of the young and the young at hearts, last night we truly appreciated a career that has spanned more than 20 years and 50 million albums sold….. and still touring strong. His "Freight Train" tour pulled into Manchester, New Hampshire for one night and hopefully it will pull into a station near you too....Don't miss it if it does.

Surprise, surprise.....Ok, I should have known that if Alan Jackson was playing anywhere in New England, my sister would be scouting out tickets. This morning she called and wondered if I was doing anything next Thursday. Of course, I have my volunteer day at City Hall on Thursdays, but I think the city will survive my absence for a day while she and I enjoy her tickets that put us in the 5th row, on the concert floor. Off the shelf comes that Stetson.

her favorite County Music Star has a new album out and she's sharing the good news.. Of course, Ada had it long before it hit the Target store shelves via AJ Fan pre-sales, and, Donald had to listen to it all the way home from Arizona........ what a guy!

Also, in addition to this good news, AJ recieved a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame a few weeks ago. In good company, sandwiched between Russell Crowe and Mel Brooks, AJ's star is located at 6901 Hollywood Blvd. Surely, a trip to the west coast is in order next winter.

Donald thinks, after selling 50 milion records, AJ could afford jeans without holes...

In Salem, we take clean streets seriously and in April, the city has a "clean sweep" program that is guaranteed to get the whole city spic and span, and just in the nick of time before the visitors flock to our city in large numbers. After a long winter, where sand, debris and remnants of last year's fall leaves pile up and become spring's nasty curbside mess, the city's streetsweeper goes into action and eventually gets to every street in Salem. Of course, the entrance corridors to the City become the first targets of this month long passage to a cleaner Salem and Winter Street 1A, is one of the first. Certainly, most all of us that have been around for a while know the drill and the schedule and have moved the vehicles off the road as instructed. And as usual, there will be a few residents that will be quite puzzled tonight as to where they last parked their cars. Then, the realization will set in and the hunt begins with a call to the police department to find the lot that they have been towed. Although it is well publicized, some just don't pay attention. Fortunately, all our guests are securely parked in our lot......Thanks to Donald, who is the ace parking policeman here.............

Team: There's Something About Mary
Ada and Jen are excited to once again rally our team, “There's Something About Mary” in support of the North Shore Medical Center’s Cancer Walk on Sunday, June 20th, 2010. While Jen’s sister Mary continues her treatment and is so excited her recent tests show great promise and improved heath, she certainly appreciated all her friends and supporters last year that uplifted her spirits by walking with her and for donating so generously to an organization that has helped HER and so many more diagnosed with this disease. Without a doubt, we want to make sure we do our part to insure everyone gets the support they need, just like Mary.

There is much to celebrate this year, this being the 20th year of the walk, and we certainly hope to have a major presence once again. While it is only our second year, we are pump to have a bigger turnout and to again raise funds beyond our expectations. Last year it became clear that raising $11,375 came about because we got started early and were fortunate to have so many folks join our team, donate, and also set up Firstgiving fundraising websites for our team. With Facebook and email addresses, we are all connected more than ever and when we personally invite people to donate, it means so much more. Jen and I are hoping you can help us in our efforts to give back to the community and will join us, and Mary, to raise as much as we can for this worthy cause. For sure it’s all about the numbers….. the number of people that can be helped by supporting this event.

A Massachusetts holiday shared by history buffs and the sports world

April 19th this year, and most usually the 3rd Monday in April, Massachusetts hosts one of the most famous running events in the world, the Boston Marathon. But really, it’s Patriots' Day, a holiday unique to our state where we celebrate and reenact on this day the battle on Lexington Green between the redcoats (British) and a ragtag group known as patriots. Also, Patriot Day events in nearby Concord host a mid-morning parade with lots of fife-and-drum bands and groups of Minutemen from surrounding towns, followed by ceremonies at Old North Bridge and the repeated firing of two brass cannons.

The events of more than two centuries ago in April 1775, now commemorated as the Patriots' Day holiday in Massachusetts, marked a turning point in the long struggle between England and her American colonies. In a march of protest and petition, which turned into revolution and independence, the fighting on April 19, 1775 foreshadowed the rebellious action of the American colonies in ultimately creating a new nation, the United States of America. Originally celebrated on April 19, Patriots' Day was moved to the third Monday of April in 1969.

114th running of the Boston Marathon
Beyond Lexington and Concord, Patriots' Day would probably be just a bank and government holiday for the most part if we hadn’t added, 114 years ago, the 26 mile run known as the Boston Marathon. (26,000 runners this year.) And while we usually have someone staying with us connected to the event; a runner, family/fans of a runner, or media, this year it’s a welcome mix of previous guests and visitors that are attracted to Salem as their destination, and not the events in either Boston, Lexington or Concord. Add to all that, the Red Sox are playing at Fenway Park this morning (11am) and you most certainly have unmeasurable crowds in Boston, which may have directed a few of our guests away from the big city and to Salem, a suburb town with just as much history and charm as any of those other communities, minus the crowds. For me, I think I will just watch all of this excitement on TV in the warmth and safety of my kitchen….a place where I can channel surf from one event to another...... A arm chair spectator; no traveling or searching for a parking space required.

While our opening day was to be Friday, April 16th, what a pleasure to have some neighbors from the north country ring our bell yesterday afternoon looking for accommodations. Affectionately referred to as "walk-ins" Donald had the pleasure of welcoming two gals from Montreal that decided to spend their last vacation day in Salem before driving back to Canada. They chose the Amelia Payson House for lodging and we were glad to spring into business regardless of any official opening date. You never know when someone might stroll into Salem and decide to stay, so Ada's Girl Scout rule is, "be prepared". Although Ada was out of the house, she knows Donald is one of the best ambassadors Salem could have and he could talk most people into staying forever if they didn't have lives to get back to. Whipping out that visitors guide, he can overload you with choices of restaurants, attractions and shops. Sometimes we have to remind him that the visitors are not here to see him and maybe he should let them get to sightseeing......At breakfast, he serves a mean cup of coffee and ample conversation as well. He has an engineering background, but I think the stereotype doesn't fit, or..at least over the years, he's learned the gift of gab from Ada.......

Celebrating their 26th year, Ada & Donald Roberts are excited to be back doing what they love; running their Bed & Breakfast, the Amelia Payson House. There’s nothing like a winter hiatus to recharge ones mind and passion for a life’s work and a true labor of love. While the length of our journey is considered a milestone in the industry, we couldn’t imagine doing anything different; a do over for sure. Now, even though we have reached retirement status, we look forward to future years at the B&B, one at a time, and all the people we are yet to meet. It’s a lifestyle we have come to love and we truly appreciate all the wonderful and faithful guests that have contributed to our 26-year success. Hope to see you all soon..... (Where's Donald? Another glorious day for traveling, but today we will make a few stops to enjoy the landscape, feel the warmth of the 80 degree sunshine and to smell the flowers blooming all around us.

Meems Bottom Covered Bridge....After trains, Donald likes scouting out covered bridges. We found this one noted in a travel brochure. Located off I-81 at exit 273 in Virginia.

One of the best-known covered bridges is the 204-foot single-span Burr arch truss known as Meem's Bottom Covered Bridge in Mount Jackson. The Meem's Bottom Bridge was constructed in 1892-93 from materials cut and quarried nearby for the massive arch supports and stone abutments, which extended 10 feet below the riverbed. It was deeded to the Highway Department in the 1930's in return for assuming its maintenance. This long span over the North Fork of the river carried traffic for more than 80 years before being burned by vandals on Halloween 1976. After salvaging the original timbers, the bridge was reconstructed and eventually undergirded with steel beams and concrete piers. The bridge was reopened to traffic in 1979 and is still in operation to date. One of the many stops along the Wilderness Trail in Shenandoah County.

West Virginia is certainly blooming everywhere you look.

Small farms and country homes like this one are scattered all along our route in Pennsylvania. Ada liked this one. Looks like it would make a nice B&B, where you could feed the animals before breakfast...and fetch your own eggs too.

Our final overnight stop is Wilkes Barre, PA where the sun sets not only on the day, but also on the wonderful winter hiatus we enjoyed in Arizona. Refreshed after a great vacation, we look forward to arriving back in Salem tomorrow and resuming our B&B lives for another great season, and all the wonderful people we are yet to meet. Year 26 and still counting. Hope you come by for a spell...

Today we headed inland and traveled the scenic byways of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. Spring is busting out all over..... it's allergy season.

After visiting family in Florida for five days over the Easter holiday, we're back on the road again. Now, this is the final three days of what has become an endless journey crossing the USA from Arizona to Massachusetts and it seems like everyone else decided to head north today as well. Whether it is snowbirders, spring training baseball fans, or spring breakers, the highway is bumper to bumper on I-95. Canadians, New Yorkers, Jersey girls & boys and folks from every state along the east coast are making the pilgrimage north, and sharing the road with so many RV's, campers, and vehicles towing trailers of all shapes and sizes. Even the trucks don't stand a chance today. And, don't even think about stopping at the rest area. No parking spaces, so most vehicles are forced to just drive through.......As seasoned travelers, we are like camels and have packed grains and nuts to keep us alive. Scouting out the good gas prices seems to be the game of the day. Do we get some in Georgia or do we wait til we hit South Carolina? Ada doesn't care where, but there has to be a Dairy Queen there..........

By 5pm most of the road warriors leave the highway and are looking for accommodations. Fortunately, having traveled this route for so many years now, we know how important it is to have room reservations and are thankful we are resting easy tonight...........

Tomorrow is another day, and we will be heading in a northwesterly direction, and away from I-95...... Roanoke, Virginia, here we come.

With Texas in our rearview, we traveled for the next two days through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and into Florida; where humidity is being felt for the first time in five months. Obviously, it's a bit soggy compared to the desert, but a welcome change just the same. Tonight we will stay in Pensacola Beach, on the Gulf of Mexico....... treating ourselves to a room with a ocean view.

Leaving Las Cruses, NM you enter Texas 25 miles down the road……..Now “big” doesn’t begin to describe a state that we will travel for 880 miles across interstate 10 in the next two days. From El Paso, Juarez Mexico, is a cannon shot over the Rio Grande River; which is now a mere trickle of water that separates Texas from the Mexican border.

Beyond El Paso, Texas becomes a land wide open. For hours, the flatlands prevail with buttes surrounding the horizon where civilization pops up every few hundred miles to beckon the weary traveler to exit and get gas. Fort Stockton is one of those places……

Fort Stockton welcomes you with these figures propped up on opposite sides of the highway.

Most of all the soldiers garrisoned at Fort Stockton from 1867 until 1886 were Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments. Surmounting obstacles of harsh living conditions, low pay, and racial prejudice, they gained a reputation for tenacity and bravery. Stationed continuously on the frontier during the years of Indian hostility, they played a major role in the settlement and development of America's western frontier.

And now, the new frontier is renewable energy, and these are everywhere you look!

Traveling east on I-10, you eventually reach the hill country of Texas where trees and more populated areas come into view. Places like Kerrville, Fredricksburg, New Bramfels, and Bandera are the suburbs of western San Antonio. We will hold up here for the night, although, we are a little anxious as this is where we had car problems last year and were delayed in our journey by three days. A lovely place to brake down, but an anxious, expensive memory for sure.

Tomorrow we will pass through San Antonio and Houston. Two great cites to visit, but hellish to drive through. A real nail bitter for Ada and a day Donald would like to have Ada packed in the trunk. Thankfully, it's Saturday and we won't be sharing the highway with as many trucks; the only good thing about the next 400 miles..........

Texas Canyon......
Left Tucson today. Weep, weep….. Of course, getting out of the driveway was the real accomplishment, but once we started down the highway, we were thinking about all the wonderful sights we would see along the way. And while we’ve made this cross country journey more times than I can count, we are always in awe of one spectacular place about 90 minutes east of Tucson known as Texas Canyon. Although it is still in Arizona, you feel like you are in Texas on a movie set where cowboys could come over that hill any minute. Cisco Kid country for sure.

The Continental Divide of the Americas, also called the Great Divide, separates the watersheds of the Pacific Ocean from those of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. It runs from the Seward Peninsula in Alaska, through western Canada along the crest of the Rocky Mountains to New Mexico. The Continental Divide moves along the crest of the Rocky Mts., which separates westward-flowing streams from eastward-flowing waters. In other word, this is where the rivers either run west of the Rocky Mts or run east of the Rocky Mts. How cool is this......

And tonight, we're in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where the roadrunner is the State bird, the Yucca plant is the State flower, and they boast about having 350 days of sunshine. Oh, and the Tourism Bureau says it's rated as the best place to retire. I tend to dispute that!

My last post from the “old pueblo”, as it’s time to head back to Salem and our B&B lives. But before we land in the Witch City, we hope to enjoy a few more adventures along the 2800 mile trail. Mexican food, roadside........

We've always hesitated to stop and partake of roadside food, but whether it is BBQ or Mexican, roadside canteens dot the country side here in the valley; mostly in the agricultural areas where lunch might be hard to find for workers in the fields or in this case, the pecan harvesters.....Today, we made the trip to Sahaurita to visit the Pecan Store again to stock up on some treats to bring back east, and there it was......lunch! Of course, while we were in the Pecan Store we asked about a local place to have lunch and the gal behind the counter highly recommended the trailer across the parking lot at the road's edge. It looked like they were doing a brisk business, so off we went.........Ordering at the window, Donald had a burro (a buritto, not a donkey) and I had a beef quesadilla, and then we plunked ourselves down at the shared tables provided. Hold the hot sauce on mine, but lather it on Don's......Yum!

I decided to spend a lovely Arizona day indoors to watch the health care voting process on C-SPAN to see if our legislators pony up, and don’t chicken out, to pass healthcare reform for America. While they pledged allegiance and “justice for all” I really wonder if they have the moxie to bring equality in healthcare to all. For decades as a sole proprietor, this is the number one issue to me and with out a doubt, so many others. Regardless of cost, access has been the real problem and just the tip of the iceberg of unfair practices of insurance companies. We’ve heard all the issues; denial due to existing conditions, aggregate limits, dictating covered procedures, and so many other insurances issues. While the bill may not be perfect, it’s a “giant leap for mankind” and I applaud our President for not backing down, regardless of the political fallout.

If you have insurance with your employer, I’m happy for you. Just don’t lose that job. Then, you will really see the true cost of insurance premiums when your employer is no longer kicking in their share. Why this is connected to employers is also an unfair matter. I’m sure it got started as a benefit to attract workers, but even that took an unfair turn until legislation stepped in to correct practices by employers when offering special insurance programs for key fulltime employees and not the rest of the fulltime workers. When employers started feeling that heat, their solution to get around that was to shift to hiring more part-time workers. Workers that they didn’t have to cover.

Health insurance should not be an entitlement only for the employed, or the burden solely on the backs of employers. It should be an opportunity available to all regardless of job status. While mandates will be perceived as an unwelcome intrusion of our personal freedoms, it’s the only way this will work. Waiting till you need health care to pay into the system will not make premiums more affordable. And, if we are to expect insurance companies to swallow reform, a mandatory component is necessary.

For as long as I can remember, healthcare reform has been kicked around and there never seems to a time when we can afford it. Certainly, as in any debate, those opposed are making some pretty outrageous and horrific statements to influence so many that are really not up to speed on the issue, or are comfortable with the status quo. If you are opposed because you think the cost of healthcare will add increased taxes associated with passing reform, just think of what it will cost you if it doesn’t pass. Surely, no one will be able to afford it and so many facets of the economy will suffer.

What ever happens today, I’m happy to live in Massachusetts, where everyone has access and choices in their healthcare. It might not be perfect; the growing pains are being felt by employers and individuals alike, but the playing field is fairer, it’s light years ahead of the rest of the country, and it truly provides justice for all.

Update: Finally, after a long day and into the late night back east, Heathcare Reform has passed, giving all those bad practices the boot..... I think once the nay sayers realize the true benefits and protections, they too will be glad healthcare reform is in place.

Appreciation Dinner for the Volunteers

Tonight was the appreciation dinner for everyone that volunteered at the 2010 Tucson Rodeo this past February. This was Ada’s 2nd year volunteering, so she and Donald enjoyed the company of all the other guys and gals that helped make this annual Tucson event a success. For 85 years, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, (The Festival of the Cowboy) has depended on hundreds of volunteers each year to perform the many tasks required to put on a 10-day rodeo, and organize the longest non-motorized 2 mile parade. From tickets sales and seating patrons, to food service and grounds keeping, the day-to-day operations of running a rodeo depends on so many dedicated people to ensure a great rodeo experience for both the first time spectator and the seasoned ticket holder. Rain or shine, the community comes together for a week and two weekends and puts on one of the best shows in the west; steeped in cowboy culture and true western tradition. They’re always looking for more volunteers.

Livestock Auction

The Lemay's......... and waiting for the breakfast.....

The Marana Stockyards hold a livestock auction just about every Thursday morning... except last week when we where there with our neighbors John & Kathy. Not deterred by last weeks disappointment, we were good to go again this morning. And this time, we brought relatives. Kathy and John have family visiting from Minnesota, so the more the merrier. While none of us had experienced this before or had a clue as to what was going to happen, we knew breakfast was part of the ritual before the 10:30am auction and that would be a good start to the day. And, little did we know, the fella pouring the coffee would be the auctioneer. (Seems everyone is cross trained at this place.) The coffee was good and so was the auctioneer.

To get a little info before the auction started, Ada quickly made friends with three locals sitting in front of her that looked like they knew what was about to take place. It seems they auction cattle, steer, and bulls based on age, weight, and pedigree. Some are auctioned by the head (total price) and others might be auctioned by $$'s per hundred pounds. As at any auction, the process is fast and you have to size up the animal in warp speed. No time to blink or think twice. Probably, this is how most ranchers in southern Arizona got started, and continue to suppliment their herds at auctions just like this. I expect these ranchers came prepared with a shopping list. One brama bull, two steer, and a calf.....

Sonoita & Patagonia Lake State Park....

80 miles southeast of Tucson, and surrounded by the Coronado National Forest, are two of our favorite towns to visit, Patagonia and Sonoita; where cowboys rule. It's truly western living and ranches that maintain a way of life that has seen very little change. If you like serenity, scenery, where the night light is the moon and the stars, it's almost heaven.

"Birding" is the other main event, attracting so many visitors that really take this sport very serious. They've come to find rare birds as they migrate from all over the North American continent........... They come with binoculars and cameras with huge lenses. Ada is most definately out of here league here.......but will try to find a few in her sights.....

Off to the Pima County Fair Grounds to attend a Train Show. Need I say more. This is Donald's candyland and he's going to look at every item on every table. Fortunately, Ada has her camera and is keeping busy videoing the event and even caught a video of a crash when two conductors were shooting the breeze and not paying attention. All the layouts were amazing and Donald was truly enjoying himself. For sure, Ada will get a good lunch afterwards for her patience........

100,000 trees on 6,000 acres...at the Green Valley Pecan Company.

PECANS......the only Native American nut, and in Green Valley the folks at GVPC helped Arizona become the 4th largest grower of pecan trees in the country. (You guessed it. Georgia is the #1 producing state, Texas is #2, New Mexico is #3 and Arizona is #4.)

Family owned and operated since 1948,the Green Valley Pecan Company isn't the largest producer of pecans, but they are the largest irrigated pecan orchard, and their location, in the height of the Sonoran Desert, provides the perfect environment for pecan cultivation. (and yes, they shake the trees with big mechanical arms to harvest them)

And then, of course, is the store.........where we spent most of our time buying chocolate covered pecans, pecan meal for Donald's cereal, honey glazed pecans, pecan brittle and a few other treats. We justified our purchases thinking we'll bring some home as gifts, but I honestly don't think they will make it the 2800 miles. Although, the store is located only 15 miles south of Tucson in Sahuarita, so it would be an easy trip we could make again before we leave the area.

I guess there's hope you might still get some.........

Javelina roaming the neighborhood

You never know where they are lurking, but you can usually find them at dusk and when you see one, there are usually a whole herd of them. Though some people think Javelina are a type of wild pig, they are actually members of the peccary family, a group of hoofed mammals originating from South America. Javelina are common in much of central and southern Arizona, including the outskirts of the Phoenix area, most of Tucson, and occasionally as far north as Flagstaff. Javelina form herds of two to more than 20 animals and rely on each other to defend territory, protect against predators, regulate temperature and interact socially. They use washes and areas with dense vegetation as travel corridors. Javelina are most active at night, but may be active during the day when it's cold. It's always exciting when you see them and if you can get to your camera fast enough, you might just be lucky enough to get a photo or video before they run off into the bushes.......

Tucson Ninety-Nines, International Organization of Women Pilots, are sponsoring the 15-cents-a-pound airplane rides as a scholarship fundraiser. It is a 503.c. nonprofit and all proceeds from the event go to aviation scholarships for women. The event is being held at one of our favorite eating places, Todd's Restaurant at Ryan Airfield, located only minutes west of Downtown Tucson on Ajo Hwy, right up front, between Airport Lane and the Airport Authority Building. (just look for the propeller outside the front door!) Of course, eat only after you've had the ride of your life; the scale will be lighter and you'll ride for a bit less!

Todd's Restaurant features American favorites enhanced by Arizona prickly pear cactus fruit products and chiles. Todd's homemade salsa, BBQ sauce and salad dressings are unique and delicious. They use the highest quality, freshest ingredients and prepare everything to order. Try the Red Tea made with syrup from the fruit of the regional prickly pear cactus.

They welcome all aircraft pilots, passengers, and crew. If you fly in, just taxi up to their rear door. Refuel, shut down, relax and they'll serve you an Arizona breakfast or lunch just the way you want. Yesterday, Donald had the Spanish omelet, and red tea of course, and I had the pulled pork barbecue sandwich with lemonade.. They even had New England Clam Chowder on the menu. Ada tried it, but she's never had celery in clam chowder before. It tasted good and they get a "A" for effort. After all, it's American Food, Arizona Style and they cook to please the flying public. We hope to see you there next week. Ada is going for the ride.

Live...late breaking. Rescue at Gates Pass

So many emergency vehicles....
Gates Pass is a well known sunset viewing site. It is one of the best vantage points to watch the sun drop out of sight in the Tucson area. And as a public stop off point to climb the mountains and view the scenery over the valley, Gates Pass is the bridge between Tucson and the Saguaro National Park. Gates Pass provides areas for picnicking, hiking, wildlife observation, nature studies and camping. A visible trail head winds around the mountains and natural desert vegetation of saguaro cacti, brush and other native cactus surrounds the area. It is also one of the most dangerous areas to drive around Tucson. The road is narrow and winds around the edge of a large mountain with just a few feet spaced between the edge of the road and a deep drop off to the valley below. Because of this driving danger, Gates Pass is not open to commercial and large vehicles over 40-50 feet long. And today, while making this drive, we pulled into one of the most popular viewing sites and before we knew it, we were surrounded by emergency vehicles as a search and rescue was about to take place. Blocked in, it was obvious we were here for the long haul…….. What had apparently happened is that a few inexperienced hikers got themselves too high and beyond their capability to get down. (Visitors going for that spectacular photo) Climbing is one thing. Getting down is another. Fortunately, they had a cell phone and called 911 and this set into motion the response of three firetrucks, an ambulance, a number of sheriffs and a 10 man rapid response search and rescue crew….

And the wait begins.... Here they come, father and son. Fortunately, none the worse for wear. Just a bit embarrassed by all the attention. Good ending!

This ain't no pony ride............

Bull riding is the most popular, and with out a doubt, the most dangerous event in professional rodeo. Agility, balance, upper body control and strong legs are essential characteristics for the successful bull rider whose size averages 5'8" tall and 150 pounds. Judges look for good body position, control and use of the free arm, while touching the animal, himself or his equipment with his free hand or failing to complete an eight second ride will disqualify the contestant. As in all roughstock events, half the score in bull riding is based on the contestant's performance and the other half on the bulls performance as the judges consider the bull's strength, power, speed, how much he spins and how much he jumps and kicks. A 100 point score is perfect. Most of the best riders achieve scores in the high 80's....

After 9 days of competitive rodeo, the prize money is awarded today and only a few of the over 700 cowboys and cowgirls that participated in the disciplines of Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Team Roping, Women's Barrel Racing, and Bull Riding will go home with some prize money and the prestigious Gold Buckle. They have come from all over the country to compete and have put on a really great show. A show that has become an annual Tucson tradition for 85 years........... Future rodeo contestant's

Already in full swing, Tucson’s annual Rodeo is stirring up the dust. With its opening day this past Saturday, the nine-day La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, “Celebration of the Cowboys,” is rounding up cowboys and cowgirls donned in their leather boots and dusty flannels, cheering on professional bull riding and barrel racing.

In timed events, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping and barrel racing, cowboys and cowgirls compete against the clock, as well as against each other. A contestant's goal is to post the fastest time in his or her event. In steer wrestling and the roping events, calves and steers are allowed a head start (only fair). The competitor, on horseback, starts in a three-sided fenced area called a box. The fourth side opens into the arena. Most of the time, the calves and the steer are the real winners as they are tough to catch.

Arriving from all over the globe, the top 64 golfers in the world are up the road at the Ritz Carton Dove Mountain Golf Resort and Spa getting ready for the Accenture Match Play Golf Tournament. Practice rounds started today and will continue tomorrow. This is the best time to get photographs as after Tuesday, cameras are not allowed. The elimination style tournament will start Wednesday when 32 pairs will be whittled down to 16 pairs to play on Thursday, then 8 pairs on Friday, 4 matches on Saturday, and then the remaining 2 golfers still standing will play 36 holes until there is a winner. We are especially watching Ben Crane as he has a Salem connection. His aunt is a Salem School Committee Member and while she will not be here to root him on, we will pick up the slack as cheerleaders for Ben…. His first opponent is Henrik Stenson from Sweden. (had my picture taken with him last year.) It's a very exciting time for our little town of Marana (just steps out of Tucson) to be hosting this event. The traffic up and down the boulevard will certainly be busier, but that's ok, the more the merrier...........

Update: Third day: A jumping cholla cactus got the best of Ben.......Villegas wins the round and moves on to day four. Too bad......for Ben. He goes home now.

Valentines Day, Tucson style........

Dinner and a movie……certainly an American tradition for couples dating on Valentines Day. Multiply that by five, and we have a party going on. And in the Southwest, the movie is Crazy Heart; a story about a washed up country singer, called Bad Blake, who lives up to his name by giving into booze, a lot of bad habits, and spending his evenings with a different filly in a different country town every night while on the road performing his has-been country tunes. A talented songwriter in his younger days, but content to ride out the rest of his life with the dwindling rewards of a previous time. And then he meets a special girl with a young son. A girl that gives him a reason to get himself clean. And so……. Ada’s thinking “happily ever after” scenario here. But, not so fast. With out giving away the “rest of the story”, it’s not the ending that everyone in the theater is hoping for, but at least no one dies and his life does get better, if not better than ever…… And as my friend AJ sings, “In the real world, the guy don’t always get the girl”, and Bad doesn’t either. All their lives move on as they should. And......just maybe an Academy Award to show for it.......
On to dinner…….at the Claim Jumper.

When you step inside a Claim Jumper restaurant you will discover an environment that is warm and comfortable. The interiors of the restaurants feature huge Douglas Fir logs, natural rock, corrugated and pressed tin, natural and finished woods and large fireplaces. Rich fabrics, authentic log chairs, moving fan systems and colorful Tiffany lamps are used to decorate the lobbies, dining rooms and saloons. And while they tend to call themselves a Saloon, it’s a most upscale one for sure. Not pricy, but certainly a comfortable gathering place that’s not afraid of large parties. From choice steaks, fresh fish, rotisserie chicken, baby back pork ribs, fresh baked pot pies, specialty salads, wood-fired pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, burgers and more, I think our table had a good cross section of their menu. Ooos and ahh’s and wondering forks were sampling everything, and everyone’s plate was fair game. Also noted for their baked goods and desserts, we spent a lot of time on the dessert menu and watching what was being served all around us. A 10” slice of chocolate cake, a éclair the size of a football, and so many more decadent selections, most of us decided seeing was enough and that we would come back just for dessert another time. Our server was Michal and he was patient, attentive and even helped out with the photography. He certainly added to the great success of the evening and is a natural at his profession. A five "heart" evening for sure!

Tubac Festival of the Arts

For four days in early February the population of the tiny historic village of Tubac swells tenfold as hundreds of roaming artists and artisans set up their white tents and offer their unique and often strange visions and creations to the masses. Thousands flock from all around Tucson, Green Valley, and Nogales to stroll through the village’s few streets, ducking in and out of all the crafty shops, eating grilled and fried food, kettlekorn and generally enjoying a 70-degree blue-sky day in late winter. Today, we've never seen it so crowded. It was so crowded, we were ushered so far back to park that we ended up driving through a farm and onto a local playground to find a spot. The parking attendant felt so bad, they didn't even want to take the $6 parking fee. While they did have a shuttle, we chose to hoof it past the farm animals and take some pictures. Tubac is only 50 miles south of Tucson, Arizona off I-19 heading toward Nogales. An easy, scenic drive, until you get there. Then, be prepared to walk your socks off...............

The Tubac Festival of the Arts is Arizona's longest-running arts festival. Year Round, the town of Tubac has a rich history dating back to the 1700's, and a vibrant arts community that visitors can explore. At the festival you will find street vendors, folk dance, music, as well as fine art and just-plain-fun art. Horse-drawn trolleys and wagons are available to shuttle people around the historic village.

Tubac was established in 1752 as a Spanish presidio (fort). It is now a destination for art enthusiasts as well as nature lovers who enjoy birding and walking along the river trail.

"A Prairie Home Companion" comes to Tucson

Arizona Public Radio, celebrating 50 years in Tucson this year, was proud to host a special live presentation of Minnesota’s own “A Prairie Home Companion” at the Tucson Convention Center tonight. Arriving in Tucson this past week, red socks and all, Garrison Keillor and all his friends from St. Paul, Minnesota spent the past week writing the show with some local talent, and getting the scoop on Tucson and all it’s current events and southwest ways. He’s a bit of a star in these parts, and especially Tucson, where so many Minnesotans choose to winter here. Don and I were introduced to this Grand Ole Opry style radio program, which airs on Saturday nights from frigid Minnesota, when a movie about the show was in theaters three years ago. All Donald needed to hear was that Meryl Streep was in it and it became a must see movie rental. (We never knew that Meryl had such a great singing voice till then. Of course, she went on to do “Momma Mia”, the Abba movie; a somewhat silly flick with great music, but Don wouldn’t have missed that either, or for anything. )

So…. thanks to our friends, Lena & Steve, we had tickets to see the live show tonight, and, as Keillor says, “with all the Minnesota frostbacks passing through Tucson on their way to Mexico”. A sold out show long before we arrived Tucson in November, it didn’t disappoint. A show unlike anything you would see back East; where time stands still for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. Where Dusty and Lefty come to Tucson to work for the O.K. Corral Condos and songs like "There’s No Rust in Tucson" play between The Weekly News From Lake Wobegon. (where the residents get cranky and eccentric as the winter drags on, and refuse to take telephone calls from warmer area codes.) It’s live radio with all the jokes, commercials, small town stories, and comes complete with all the sound effects by Fred Newman. And at the end of the show, everyone sings “Goodnight Sweetheart” and “I’ll Fly Away”.
Let the credits roll……….
I certainly hope everyone gets to see this in one’s lifetime, …… or will find one of those 590 radio stations on the radio dial some lazy Saturday afternoon. You will be hooked too!

A little bit of history for the unacquainted.......
”If you showed up on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota and plunked down your $1 admission (50 cents for kids) to attend the very first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, you were in select company. There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and the APHC team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. There were broadcasts from this venue and that, until March 4, 1978, when the show moved to The World Theater, a lovely, crumbling building that was one plaster crack away from the wrecking ball. (Now fully renovated and renamed The Fitzgerald, it is the show's home base.)

In June of 1987, APHC ended for a while. Garrison thought it was a good idea at the time, but only two years later, the show was back, based in New York and called American Radio Company of the Air. But there's no place like home. So in 1992, it was back to Minnesota and, soon after, back to the old name: A Prairie Home Companion.

There has been plenty of adventure in the past 30-plus years — broadcasts from Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, Germany, Iceland and almost every one of the 50 states; wonderful performers, little-known and world-renowned; standing ovations and stares of bewilderment. We've missed planes, coped with lost luggage, dodged swooping bats and hungry mosquitoes, plodded through blizzards, and flown by the seat of our pants.

Today, A Prairie Home Companion is heard by more than 4 million listeners each week on some 590 public radio stations, and abroad on America One and the Armed Forces Networks in Europe and the Far East. Garrison recalls, "When the show started, it was something funny to do with my friends, and then it became an achievement that I hoped would be successful, and now it's a good way of life."

Storms a comin....... and an alert is being broadcast all over the airwaves to take cover and bring in the pets and patio furniture. Heavy rain will definitely fill up the washes fast and there will be flooding all over Tucson. There will be driving detours for sure; 70 mph winds, thunder and lightning as well. Possible snow....Glad we left Nevada early on Tuesday. Would have been traveling in this today.... This is how Arizona does winter.....

Always a favorite place for a day trip when in Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon and it's 13 mile scenic loop drive is one of the area's best bang for your tax dollar..... A National Conservation Area, your National Park "America the Beautiful" pass is welcome here. And if your age qualifies, a senior pass costs you only $10 for a life time membership and includes all the travelers in your vehicle, regardless of age. We've had ours for years, (thanks to Donald) and use it as often as we can. Free baby!

Less then an hour's drive west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon has many significant geologic features. The area is a good place to kick back and just enjoy nature's wonders and take endless pictures of amazing rock formations. This photographer was on over load, but will only tease you with a few........ The pictures say it all.

Road trip.......Oatman, AZ., day 2

Leaving Lake Havasu City and heading north and west on Rte 40 for a few miles, you exit the highway and pick up Historic Route 66 and travel into a former gold mining town call Oatman, AZ. Once home to more than 10,000, the population now numbers less than 200, and a few dozen wild burros. Of the estimated 1,500 burros that live in the surrounding hills, fortunately, only the dozen or so wandering the downtown streets today were seeking handouts and posing for pictures. Each has and knows it’s name, and by tradition, the first person that sees a new baby burro, gets the privilege of assigning its birth name.
As in all tourist towns, galleries and gift shops line the main street. The Gable/Lombard suite #15 at the Oatman Hotel is named for the famous movie duo who spent their honeymoon night here. We had lunch here; a Navaho Taco and Sarsaparilla for my Cowboy. Oatman offers tours of the Gold Road Mine, which tunnels under Route 66. Gunfights happen in the streets about three times a day and the gunfighters even perform actual marriage ceremonies they prefer to call “Shotgun Weddings”. We didn’t find any gold here, but did manage to get out of town with any gold we came with, minus the cost of grub and a souvenir magnet.

Is not falling down..........

Leaving Quartzsite on Rte 95, and heading north for about 70 miles, you will see Lake Havasu City, which connects AZ to a California island, via the London Bridge......... As strange as it sounds, it's true. This five-arch bridge that spans the Bridgewater Channel on the Arizona side of Lake Havasu is the real deal. It's the creation of Englishman John Rennie and originally built in 1825 to span the River Thames.

Not the Tower Bridge that certainly comes to mind, but one of the London Bridges just the same. Almost a 200 year old piece of masonry that shares in the other London Bridges reputation for falling, burning, sinking, or being torn down. In Lake Havasu City, AZ., the London Bridge spans a small man-made channel connecting Arizona to an island once used as an army air field in California.

So how did it get here? In the early 60's, Robert McCulloch Sr. who's company produced outboard motors, small engines, etc...and worked on the California island, imagined developing a town that could be used as a recreational destination. While building up the town, now known as Lake Havasu City, he realized he needed a tourist attraction to draw people here. Finding out that a London Bridge was condemned to demolition and put up for sale on the world market as a piece of English history, McCulloch's $2.5 million bid sealed the deal. He now had his tourist attraction..... Dismantled, each stone was numbered and shipped. It took three years and approx $7.5 million to ship and reconstruct over dry land. The blocks were re-assembled like a jigsaw puzzle with the help of huge mounds of sand and dirt. Once completed, the dirt was then dredged from underneath the arches, forming a one-mile channel. Then the waters of Lake Havasu were allowed to flow through the channel for the first time in August 1971. Officially dedicated on October 10th, 1971, over 100,000 people, including the Lord Mayor of London, attended the hugh celebration and marvel. Bring on the tourists!

Road trip.......... Quartzsite, AZ., day 1, part 1

Having been in Tucson for two months now, Donald is getting antsy and ready to take a road trip. So yesterday, Ada spent some time working out the logistics of where we will go, where we will stay and for how long. The route will be Quartzsite, Lake Havasu City (London bridge), Oatman, Vegas, Death Valley and few other adventures not planned as yet. We leave tomorrow and will be back the following Thursday. For sure, with Ada's new camera, pictures will follow.......... gems and more gems.......

The first stop, Quartzsite, Arizona is a favorite place for Donald and he can't wait to get going. Located west of Phoenix, at the junction of Interstate 10 and US 95, and 17 miles from the Colorado River, Quartzsite is not just a town, it's an event. Established in 1867 on the site of old Fort Tyson, (constructed in 1856 by Charles Tyson for protection against Indian raids) and named Quartzite because quartz was occasionally found in the area. The name evolved to Quartzsite through an error in spelling.

Rocks, rocks and more rocks……. a true rock hunter’s paradise. Piled high with agates, limonite cubes, gold and quartz being just a few of the stones and gems known to be prevalent here. In town, the Hi Jolly Monument honors the Arab camel driver, Hadji Ali, who took part in an unsuccessful 1850’s U.S. War Department attempt to use camels as beasts of burden in the desert. There are many points of interest including the Gem and Mineral Shows, historical sites, day trips and many off-road ATV trails. Donald is in heaven here. Not sure how many stones he can fit in the car.

Quartzsite is world famous for its winter show season………
Quartzsite hosts thousands of vendors at its famous outdoor and indoor swap meets. Shoppers can find anything and everything they could possibly want to buy. There are dealers and sellers here from all over the world with some of the most unusual items you can find. Several of the bigger show areas specialize in rocks, gems, and minerals from all over the continent.
Amethyst from Brazil, opals and crystals from Australia, turquoise from Africa and the U.S., fossilized geodes and ancient bones from everywhere.

If antiques are your thing, there are dozens of vendors who bring them in from all over the country----dishes, pans, lamps, jewelry, wagons, household items and much more. If you are looking for homemade craft items, there are plenty to choose from, and some you will not see anywhere else. There are several craft shows going on all the time, and major craft shows during the peak season.

If jewelry is your thing, there are hundreds of vendors selling handmade and commercially made necklaces, earrings, brooches, etc. . Made with some of the hundreds of kinds of gemstones found all over the world as well as in the desert area around Quartzsite. This is a dealer’s paradise, with hundreds of booths filled with gems, minerals, findings, ready made items and raw material for making jewelry and anything else you can think of. If you are a RV’er or sportsman, there are some shows that specialize in the things you may need for your traveling and pleasure. Looking for T-shirts, souvenirs, socks, windchimes, pottery, polished rock eggs, and other items, slices of rocks for any craft use, wood carvings, clothing, medical aides, dolls, Indian blankets and jewelry, and much much more, then Quartzsite is the place to come to in the winter. There is an old saying here that if you can’t find it in Quartzsite, then it hasn’t been thought of yet.

The “season” in Quartzsite starts in November and lasts until March. The main shows are in January and February. Some vendors stay all year. Quartzsite also has many many year round business that are happy to help you find anything you may need or want. Quartzsite certainly has something for everyone and Ada hopes Donald can resist buying every geode in sight.

The games have all been played and the final scores are in. Hallelujah, Fantasy Football is all over for the 2009 Season. While Ada will admit it's definitely more fun to win, especially after coming so close last year, the real deal was sharing the sport with all her friends back in Salem. Certainly, it will be pizza for everyone when she gets back home. Let the post season begin, but Ada will
only be rooting for the Patriots and hoping they make it to the SuperBowl. Beyond that, her Sundays will be spent paying more attention to Donald, who has been most accommodating by watching more football than he ever bargained for.

It's do or die.....the last Fantasy Football Sunday

Week 17 and it’s the final Fantasy Football Sunday for team: SalemCiy…… and Donald can’t wait for it to be over. All 32 NFL teams will play their games today and then the playoffs begin. Fortunately for Donald, Ada’s “SalemCity” teammates have only signed up for the regular season, so her victory or misery will soon be over. Currently in first place, but only by a point, “Arizona Girl” has felt the pressure of “Guy is a Girl” on her heels for the whole season. Up against a formidable player, Ada has had a lot of lucky breaks, but Jane is real good. The real deal is that both of them are leaving Mr. Frank n’ Beans in the dust. The girls rule for sure. We’ll just have to see which one…………. WE ARE READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!

Not many people in Tucson AZ. are spending their New Years Day watching the Boston Bruins faceoff against the Philadelphia Flyers in Boston Fenway Park, but an outdoor rink on the Red Sox infield is such a different sporting event, any true Boston sports fan couldn't miss this. Donald says, probably just Ada is the only one watching out west. For sure, everyone else is watching College Football....

With James Taylor performing the U.S. national anthem and Daniel Powter, a native of British Columbia, performing the Canadian anthem just prior to the opening faceoff, both singers were joined by members of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard; and a military flyover really got the crowded roaring to sound barrier breaking levels.

And of course, the Bostonians offered one of their loudest ovations when Hockey Hall of Famers Bobby Orr (retire # 4) and Bobby Clarke met at center ice for the ceremonial opening puck drop. The two shook hands and then each skated off as players from the Flyers and Bruins entered the surface. The weather is a "ice comfortable" temperature of 39 degrees with cloudy skies. (no melting sunshine in sight.) No score yet............ Where's my skates.......... the Bruins might need my help!

Walking the streets that Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and rough and tumble cowboys walked over 130 years ago, Tombstone was founded as a mining boom-town in 1879. Landmarks and Historic attractions like the Crystal Palace Saloon, Big Nose Kate's, and Boothill Graveyard line the washboard streets where time stands still. And of course, days of lawlessness and violence climaxed with the infamous Earp-Clanton battle, fought near the rear entrance of the O.K. Corral, on October 26, 1881.

Martin Scorsese, watch out. Ada's now in the movie business. So many bells and whistles on this new camera, it will probably take her all winter to figure it out. (The instruction booklet is about 150 pages.) Santa Donald found a new way to keep Ada busy while he reads his newspaper. Certainly, she will be immersed in learning all the great things she can do now, and no longer will her pictures be blurry or out of focus. You better be on your guard, she can take pictures from a mile away and catch all your freckles.... Lena & Steve will be my first victims tomorrow. We're off for a drive to Mescal Road. A 16 mile scenic byway that you pick up about 1 hour east of Tucson on I-10. From old movie sets to creek crossings, we'll take it as far as Happy Valley. (if the car holds up to the wash board road.....)

Snow on the Catalina Mountains…..

Christmas in Tucson celebrates the holidays mostly in 70 degree sunshine, but every once in a while a dusting of snow graces the landscape of the Catalina Mountains. You could tend to take the beautiful days and sunsets like this for granted after awhile, but not us. Every night the camera is ready to capture the most colorful end of a day. The best sunsets occur when there are at least a few high clouds. Higher clouds are hit by the sun's rays before they pass through the lower atmosphere, where the air has more particles. Sunlight is composed of a spectrum of colors that range from violet and blue at one end to orange and red on the other. At sunrise or sunset, sunlight takes a much longer path through the atmosphere than during the middle part of the day. Tonight we got the blue and violet end of the spectrum for sure......... And most likely, rain tomorrow.

4th Avenue Street Fair

Twice a year Tucson hosts a spring and winter street fair called the 4th Avenue Street Fair and for the last six years we have enjoyed attending and buying one of their artist commissioned posters that highlights the southwest landscape or the multi-cultural aspects of the region. This year, they have chosen the Tucson Trolley, which runs along Arizona University Blvd to 4th Avenue.

Electric streetcars began operating in Tucson in 1906 as a replacement of the horse and mule drawn streetcars already in service. By 1930 the growth of Tucson outpaced the ability of the streetcars to provide adequate service and in December of that year rail streetcar operation in Tucson was ended. Then, in 1983, a group was founded to bring back the trolley as part of the University of Arizona’s 1985 Centennial. Old Pueblo Trolley, a nonprofit, all volunteer museum was formed. Trolley restoration began in the spring of 1985 and track construction began in 1987. Major support has been received from all parts of the community (FAMA is a big contributor), including members of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1116, who, with the support of Tucson Electric Power Company, built and continue to maintain the overhead power.Old Pueblo Trolley operates through some of the most historic and diverse areas of Tucson. Beginning in the heart of The Fourth Avenue Business District, the trolley passes the length of the Avenue, turns onto University Boulevard where it passes beautifully restored homes (and the Arizona Historical Society) and terminates near the main gate of the University of Arizona.

Free to the public, the Fourth Avenue Street Fair brings together 400+ arts and crafts booths, oodles of food vendors, 2 stages, street musicians, jugglers, street performers, the Free SPIKE kids hands-on-art Pavilion, face painting, balloons, and tons of other fun activities, and then packs them into a three day celebration.And when you no longer have a use for your saxaphone or trumpet, you can turn it into a lamp or end table. How clever!

With his signature red bandanna that surrounds his now silver braids, to his songs that speak of tough and rough Texas livin, Willie Nelson and the Asleep at the Wheel band rolled into Tucson this week for two sold out performances. Ada only had to mention to Donald that Willie Nelson was coming to town and he didn’t hesitate in saying “Can we go? Is it too late to get tickets?” And before he could say “how much”, Ada was online ordering the best seats she could get her internet hands on. A country legend at 76, Willie still attracts fans of all ages and from all music genre’s. Last night, Willie certainly excited the entire audience and had them dancing in the aisles with a formidable list of famous crowd pleasers that span six decades. "Mamma's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," "Poncho and Lefty," "Always on My Mind," "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," and of course, "On the Road Again", were just a few of the 100 songs he performed non-stop. A must see concert when ever he’s in town and a truly great start to our southwest hiatus.

Snow in the Tucson desert is rare, depending on the elevation.....

Last night we had a lightning and rain storm; usually a welcome sight when you live in the desert and it hasn't rained for a while. Surrounded by five mountain ranges, Tucson can also get measurable snow if you live at an elevation above 4000 ft. We live at about 3000 ft, so a dusting of snow is a common occurrence and just enough to blanket the golf course in the early morning, but certainly gone as soon as the temperatures rise to the 70's by noon....... Mother Nature giveth and taketh away. Beauty without the nuisance of shoveling.

Chef Donaldo.......

When it comes to the kitchen, this guy rules! Nothing makes him happier then when he’s chopping, peeling, sautéing, and especially tasting. And…….he does most of the clean up too. A gal couldn’t be more thankful for all the hours this guy spends in a kitchen, whether it’s in Salem or in Tucson. While Ada might have done the shopping, planned the menu, set the table and hoped to manage the whole production, Donald is in his groove behind this counter. And after the feast, Donald will surely be content in his easy chair with a new 1000 page book Ada bought him yesterday while she watches three NFL games in hopes of maintaning her first place position on her Fantacy Football team. And just maybe, there might be a walk around the golf course to make room for dessert, as on Thursdays you get to “Walk on the Wild Side”. A term golfers have for non-golfers who dare to walk the course during open play.

However you spend your holidays, Don & Ada wish everyone a great Thanksgiving; one we surely celebrate for the truly blessed lives we enjoy, and for all the friends and family that we might not see this day, but are in our thoughts always, and especially today.

Tucson weather for the week and for as long as they can predict, is heavenly, heavenly heavenly. Approaching from the north upon arrival last week, we did hit colder weather and a bit of snow in Show Low, AZ., but now that we are in Tucson, this is how it's going to be for quite some time. Early morning walks and after sunset temperatures can differentiate by 30 to 40 degrees, but refreshing just the same. Are you ready to hop a plane and visit?

Usually hiding under a spoon cactus, they burrow underground hoping to stay out of sight from larger varmints on the lookout for them. Star struck.........Ada & Alan Jackson

A superfan, Ada has always wanted to meet her Country Music idol, Alan Jackson. While her sister would be considered an AJ stalker, Ada thought, maybe someday she would have an opportunity if she just passed through Nashville enough times. We’ll, this trip through Nashville, TN on her way to Arizona, an opportunity, or fate, made it all possible. Of course, snooping around town and making friends with the locals helped. (You just have to hide that Boston accent, especially after the Patriots shellaced the Titans a few weeks ago 59 to zip..)

Ada and all the other country music fans coming to Nashville during CMA Week had the opportunity to meet Alan Jackson at a new attraction – a temporary Cracker Barrel Old Country Store retail shop, right in the middle of downtown, at lst & Broadway. A one-week-only attraction; it opened November 7th and continued til the 11th. It featured the newly released Alan Jackson Collection. (A new album and a whole host of products from calendars to coasters.) The highlight of the week for Ada & Don was the in-store appearance by superstar Alan Jackson on Tuesday, November 10th, where purchases could be autographed and a photo taken with “the Man” himself. Who cared that we had to get up at 5am to get one of the 300 tickets available for the Meet & Greet……… For sure, sleeping is so overrated!

Almost residents...........
Another year filled with special guests having a great time in our fascinating City, Ada & Don can’t believe how fast the season has flown by. And while Halloween has it’s own excitement, somehow people seem to find the true essence of Salem, beyond the carnival atmosphere that seems to prevail in October. Repeating guests, Carl & Barbara are two of those folks that have fallen in love with Salem and just can’t get enough of it. We are glad to recognize and enjoy their company as our last guest of the season and look forward to seeing them again in 2010 for their 4th Halloween retreat with us. For sure, we will be rolling out the fun carpet!

It was a long day (7am to 8pm), but well worth the results, and the Election Day party gave everyone the chance to let loose and celebrate Kim's victory and leadership for four more years. It also seals Ada's "Girl Thursday" volunteer job at city hall with Jen, Jason, & Kim; a never boring diversion from her B&B chores. Although Ada will miss her friends for a few months while she and Donald travel to Arizona for the winter, all will be in good hands with Mayor Driscoll in the corner office. Congratulations to her, and all the other candidates that ran for public office. Campaigning is hard work, but the real work begins when the phone starts ringing with constituent concerns. For now, let's just enjoy the moment!

All the rage, and a lot fun to boot, Vintage Photography in Salem has them lining up at 172 Essex Street to have there photos taken in Halloween garb for that souvenir 8 x 10 portrait. This mother and daughter certainly got into the "spirit" of the season and can't wait to show the folks back home their "good witch" photos.

Re-Elect Kim Driscoll for Mayor

I know it's Halloween in Salem, but Ada’s friend Kim is running for re-election, and although it’s a quiet election year (really no opposition for her) no one is taking anything for granted. Most likely, the signs will be a public service reminder to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd, as we do have a few Ward Councilor, Councilor at Large, and School Committee races that people need to come out and vote for. For sure, Ada will do whatever she can to see that Kim has great exposure on Winter Street. Besides, she has her volunteer job as Girl Thursday to secure. Now, if you could only see her car!

Well, we couldn't be in a better spot (entrance to the Visitor's Center) or partnered with a better business than the Witch Museum, the Amelia Payson House is a proud sponsor of one of the many Haunted Happenings Banners that decorate the lamp posts lining the streets of Salem this October. While Biff keeps me company on the post, we've been seeing record crowds coming and going as the city has certainly rolled out the fun carpet. I hope you're coming, as there isn't a better place than Salem to be in October and at Halloween. You'll have a "spooktacular" good time for sure!

While everyone in Salem is enjoying the Biz Baz Fair and Kids Day on the Common tomorrow, Donald and Ada will have slipped out of town to go to the Topsfield Fair; probably the oldest continuing harvest fair in the country. Crafts, 4H, Midway, Clydesdale's, Flying Wallendas, not to mention the curly fries, kettlecorn, fried dough and a 1400 lb pumpkin. All that and more, but the real reason we are going: a LeAnn Rimes concert in the arena. A Mississippi girl, she is Donald’s favorite flavor and has watched her grown up from the 13 year old that hit the country music scene with her 1st number one hit “Blue”, to the "all grown up" professional she is today. She is truly one of the shinning stars of Country Music.........

I know it's only October 1st, but in Salem, we celebrate Halloween all month long. And tonight, residents and visitors lined the parade route along Derby, Washington and Essex Streets to watch the Grand Halloween Parade. The theme this year was "A Night at the Museum", so there were costumed Sacagawea's, Teddy Roosevelt's, Cowboys, Dinosaurs, tiny Romans, Pharaoh's and mischievous monkeys; all lead by the Grand Marshalls, Mayor Kim Driscoll, and the Hero of the Year, retiring Police Chief Robert St.Pierre. Certainly, a great kickoff to a really fun month and spooktacular good time in the Witch City.

At Meadowbrook, a beautifully landscaped open air venue in the lakes region of New Hampshire, country legend Alan Jackson put on a great show to a packed, sold out crowd. Performing so many of his hits, that of course, everyone knows by heart, it became a non-stop sing along for over 90 minutes. Scanning the masses of people, the love affair with Alan Jackson's lyrical ballades attracts generations between 8 and 80 and the his concerts certainly become family affairs..... just like our's did.

Counting down the hours....26 left, until Ada & Don are off to see one of their country music favorites, Alan Jackson. Actually, he's Ada's favorite, as Don's favorite flavor is LeAnn Rimes, and he will get to see her on October 1oth at the Topsfield Fair. Ada received the tickets for the concert in New Hampshire tomorrow from her sister for her birthday in May and they have been in the safe deposit box ever since. (Taking no chances.....)

Ok, now that we’ve sung that tune, and they're tired of hearing it, we welcome two couples from Buenos Aires (Beautiful Air) for a few days while they explored Salem and the North Shore. Fascinated by the Witch Trials history, Salem is their last stop before flying home after three weeks touring New England and New York City. They loved the big cities, but glad to be mellowing out in Salem. After a full day walking around Salem yesterday, they were off to the Rebecca Nurse House in Danvers this morning, (always unpredictable, I hope they were open) then, off to picturesque Rockport and Gloucester in the afternoon. I expect them home later, looking for a place to have a late night bite. Fingers crossed, I hope they haven’t sent all the chefs home by 9pm, as it’s customary in Argentina to venture out for the evening meal when the rest of us are going to bed.
